In our short interview series, we introduce you to alumni, students, and lecturers who provide insights into their creative fields. This time in the program – the visual arts! POP students Carina, Kamila, and Angela took the time to answer 5 questions about their specialization in graphic design. Not only do the three share their field, but they have also all made it onto the new campus calendar! What the three have in common and where they may differ, you can read in the current feature.

Question 1: Have you always been interested in graphic design, or did that come later?

Carina: "In school, I was always enthusiastic about art class, which initially led me to the training as a design technical assistant and subsequently to the consecutive studies."

Kamila: "I wanted to turn my artistic and creative talent into a profession my whole life, and graphic design was the answer."

Angela: "I have always been interested in new media. The opportunity to breathe life into my art through motion design, augmented and virtual reality, is fascinating."

Question 2: What skills, qualities, or traits should one possess as a graphic designer?

Carina: "Passion and attention to detail."

Kamila: "Creativity, ambition, and courage."

Angela: "Empathy and psychological understanding for the strategy and marketing required for the product. Also, the willingness to continuously educate oneself."

Question 3: What plans do you have for the future? What would be your ideal profession?

Carina: "I plan to follow my bachelor's degree with a master's program. I can envision working as a team member in an advertising agency in the fields of photo, film, and design."

Kamila: "I want to work in an advertising agency. I enjoy collaborating with like-minded individuals. My focus would be on illustration and visual communication."

Angela: "As a freelancer or for a studio dealing with realities; defying physical laws and boundaries. According to the motto: Is this a dream, or does art let us dream? Implementing exciting projects would be important to me. Being a motion designer or 3D game artist would be an interesting job. A combination would be great. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and would like to do that as a lecturer."

Question 4: Your opinion on technology: Can you only achieve a good product with expensive equipment?

Carina: "No, older equipment provides a special flair, but the main thing is not to use a smartphone camera ;)"

Kamila: "Technical knowledge and good equipment alone are not enough. Important design aspects such as composition, perspective, color impact, scene, etc., also play a crucial role."

Angela: "It's like in craftsmanship - good tools make the work easier."

Question 5: Is creativity innate, or can creativity be learned?

Carina: "I think the motivation or the passion to strive for something creative is responsible for whether creativity can be unleashed within oneself."

Kamila: "Even as a child, I was good at painting, crafting, drawing, etc. I believe creativity is both – innate and learnable. Our creativity is often limited only by our reluctance to truly dare to be creative."

Angela: "I think it's a bit of both. The desire to express oneself creatively, combined with a learning eye to see things and understand connections."
